Modeling Composites the Simple Way

Introduction to ANSYS Composite PrepPost
In this workshop we will create a simple plate with five plies
The plies will be stacked up as a (30°,-30°,0°,-30°,30°) layup
We will use material from the engineering database in ANSYS and go through the modeling process of the composite layup.The solution process and postprocessing process will be covered in the next workshop (kiteboard)

Workshop Kiteboard
In this workshop we will model a kiteboard.
We will go through the complete process of modeling -solving – postprocessing.
The bottom plies for the kiteboard are three plies arranged as -45°,0°,45° layup. On top of those layers we will model asandwich core. On top of the sandwich core we will model a -45°,0°,45° layup

Workshop Helix
This workshop will help using edges to orient fiber directions.
Very often fiber directions follow the outer structure of a design. To use this when defining fiber directions ANSYS Composite PrepPost can define the directions based on edges in the model.

Using multiple oriented element set to define a complex composite layup
Tapering of core materials
Using multiple rosettes and different selection methods

Workshop Rules
The layup area of the oriented element sets is usually defined by named selections.
This requires modifications within the geometry when specific layup areas are necessary or when areas shall be modified to improve the composite design

Workshop Draping
Define draping for modeling plies
Select a seed point
Show draped fiber directions
Show draping shear
Show and export flatwrap
Define draping based on an oriented element set
The effect of different seed points

Workshop Solid Modeling
This workshop will cover the solid model workflow using a simple composite assembly
The composite part will be combined with metallic parts into an assembly, and analyzed

Workshop Parameters in ANSYS Composite PrepPost
Define input parameters for the ply angle of all six defined plies
Solve the model and define output parameter for bending and torsion stiffness of the model
Define output parameter for composite specific failure evaluation
Specify design variations in ANSYS Workbench and update all design points

Workshop Delamination 
Set up properties for delaminating interfaces inside engineering data
define delaminating interfaces inside ACP
Use predefined interfaces from ACP inside Mechanical
Alternatively use contact definitions with cohesive zone material inside Mechanical
Boundary conditions and analysis settings
Postprocessing

Workshop Submodelling 
Analyze global static model
Define Submodel analysis on Project schematic

Workshop, Temperature Dependent Material 
Define Temperature dependent Material inside engineering data
Set up thermal analysis and solve for temperature field
Solve static model using temperature load

Workshop Solid Modeling and Ply Drop Offs
The second workshop in the solid modeling section will cover ply drop offs and how to use cut-off rules to model complex solid composite designs
