POSITIONING OF THE FMH FOR THE SIMULATION OF THE OCCUPANT PROTECTION
IN THE INTERIOR IMPACT LABORATORY TEST

This tutorial presents the FMVSS 201U tool of ANSA for Occupant Safety analysis.
The FMVSS 201U tool is used for the study of the FMH (Free Motion Headform) impact on the
vehicle’s interior trim for the FMVSS201U laboratory test. The tool automatically identifies the
impact points on the trim according to the regulation and positions the FMH on them, creating
finally the corresponding keyword files.

The user doesn’t have to be familiar with ANSA. All the steps that have to be followed are presented
in detail in the current document. Also, there is no need to have knowledge of a specific solver. The
tool works exactly in the same way in all crash Decks LS-DYNA, PAMCRASH, ABAQUS and
RADIOSS. The specific example is implemented in LS-DYNA Deck.

FMVSS 201U test examines the impact of the FMH (Free Motion Headform) with the plastic
components of the upper interior of the car (trim). To do so the user has to position the FMH to
some “areas” on the plastic components of the model and perform the impact tests.
Both actions, the identification of Target Points and the positioning on them according to the
regulation, are applied using ANSA FMVSS201U tool.
