Photopia User’s Guide

CHAPTER 1: PHOTOPIA OVERVIEW
Photopia is a general 3D luminaire design and analysis program specifically designed for
non-imaging and illumination optical systems. Photopia’s raytracing procedures have
evolved from a broad knowledge of luminaire analysis techniques ranging from non
diffuse radiative transfer to non-specular 3D raytracing. Photopia’s calculation basis is
probabilistic raytracing, using real lamp geometries and measured intensity distributions,
as well as measured directional reflectance and transmittance data for luminaire
materials. Photopia’s Parametric Optical Design Tools have evolved from years of
experience in developing illumination optics considering the complexities of designing
around non-point sources and using non-specular materials.
Photopia’s mission is to aid the luminaire design process by providing both an interactive
design environment as well as a robust analysis engine that predicts 3D candela and
surface illuminance distributions for luminaires constructed directly within Photopia or in
an external 3D CAD program. User specified analysis settings allow for quick or detailed
analyses of the luminaire design. In addition, all calculated output is available for viewing
as calculations are in progress via a display update facility. In this way, a user can
observe evolving output as a function of a specified percentage of the total analysis
process.
